Interpretation with Seismic Attributes
The Coherence Attribute
Among the different kinds of attributes, the coherence attribute is one that does not require extensive interpretation work. Coherence coefficients for seismic trace similarity are calculated in a grid using a nine-trace operator. The coherence algorithm is used to enhance discontinuities (faults and/or stratigraphic details) in 2D and 3D data.
Figure 1 shows an example of an application of the coherence algorithm, with a nominal seismic time slice (colored image) and a coherency time slice (black and white image). Faults are difficult to interpret in the conventional time slice, but these are clearly shown in the coherency time slice.
