Cement Additives in Drilling
Antifoam Agents
A number of cement additives can cause the slurry to foam during the mixing process. This air entrainment can lead to inaccurate density measurements and once downhole, when the air bubbles are compressed, result in a higher density cement than expected, leading to other problems. Antifoam agents adjust the surface tension of the foaming liquid phase or alter the dispersibility of solids in the cement system. Two common antifoam agents are polyethylene glycol (PEG) and silicone emulsions. Very small concentrations can achieve a desired result, typically less than 0.1% BWOW. PEG must be added before foam forms to be efficient. After foam forms, silicone emulsions can effectively remove the foam.
