Dispersants
Well cement slurries are concentrated suspensions of particles in water whose rheological (flow) properties are related not only to the relative volume fractions of particles and fluid but also to particle interactions. Dispersants act on these particle interactions to reduce viscosity and control rheological properties.
Commonly-used Dispersants
Polynaphthalene sulfonate (PNS) is the most common and cost effective dispersant for oil well cements. However, it can no longer be used in some marine environments due to its toxicity and non-biodegradability in seawater. For freshwater slurries, 0.2 to 1.0% active PNS BWOC is normal. For slurries containing sodium chloride (which increases flocculation) concentrations as high as 4% PNS BWOC may be necessary.
