Plug Cementing | What is Plug Cementing?

Dump Bailer Method

A dump bailer is a tool generally run on wireline that contains a quantity of cement slurry and is designed to open when it encounters a bridge plug previously set inside the casing below the desired plug location. The cement is “dumped” on the bridge plug, either by mechanical action or electronic signal sent through the electric wireline (Animation 1). A casing collar locator can also be used to precisely locate the bailer.

This method is generally used for setting plugs at shallow depths, but can be used at greater depths if the cement is properly retarded. It is a relatively inexpensive approach since both bridge plug and bailer can be run on wireline and a rig is not needed.

Multiple runs are necessary if a plug volume larger than the volume of the bailer is needed. Generally, dump bailers hold between 1 and 10 gallons of cement, depending on the length and diameter of the tool.
