Core Description

Fossils and Microfossils

The preserved remains or traces of animals, plants and other organisms (Figure 1) are often good indicators of the depositional environment and, where fossils have a limited existence range, the age of the formation. Fossil material encountered in cores has higher reliability than that obtained from ditch cuttings, which may have their depth integrity made uncertain by cavings and the drilling mud circulation lag time.
